The Glass Menagerie
by Tennessee Williams
"I'd better not take it. I'm pretty clumsy with things." The foreshadowing in this quote comes true a page later when Jim brakes the unicorn's horn when he bumps the table. In a way Jim did Laura a favor. After he broke the unicorn she seems to wake up from the dream world she has been in. Just like the unicorn which is an imaginary creature, Laura was in an imaginary world in which all she had to do was clean her glass figurines. Then, when unicorn broke it was just like all of the regular horses, real. When the unicorn broke Laura snapped out of her dream world and seemed to realize she needed to take control of her life. She wasn't even upset when Jim told her he had a fiance. She realized that she could go out into the world and do things for herself as well as find a husband if she wanted. Laura finally understood that she could not sit around all day taking care of glass. She needed to get out into the world and live for more than the glass menagerie.
