"Batter my heart, three-person God"
By John Donne

This poem is about getting God to help the speaker turn to him rather than Satan. The speaker says that God must "break, blow, burn" to make him into a new person. He is currently a sinful person who is "betrothed" to the devil. He says he loves God but he is not able to do anything to become good without God forcefully taking him away from Satan. In order to do God's will, he can't be allowed to have free will.

An irony in this poem occurs towards the end. The speaker says: "Divorce me, untie or break that knot again, Take me to you, imprison me..." This is ironic because the speaker is trading one imprisonment for another. He is originally tied to Satan. However, he wants God to break that bond and imprison him again.
