Brave New World
by Aldous Huxley

"Bloated, sagging, and among those firm youthful bodies, those undistorted faces, a strange and terrifying monster of middle-agedness, Linda advanced into the room (150)." In this quote Linda is described as a monster because she is old and fat: things no one in the "civilized world" ever have to deal with. They give people supplements and blood-surrogate so that they do not age. Before getting lost on the reservation, she had been considered pretty enough for the Director to like her. However, because Linda went without the anti-aging treatment for so many years on the Savage reservation, she aged and fattened like a normal person would. Therefore, although she was raised and conditioned in London, she was still considered grotesque. The funny part is that Linda seemed unaware of her grotesqueness. Even though she grew up in the society, she did not realize how she looked to the others and hugged the Director. She did not think of the reaction of the society when she went out in public. When she did appear a girl in the hatchery even screamed.
