Othello
Shakespeare

"Beshrew him for ’t! How comes this trick upon him? (IV ii 129-130)" Here, Iago is asking Desdemona why Othello would call her a whore. This is an example of dramatic irony because the reader knows that Iago is the cause of Desdemona's problem. However, Desdemona and Emilia believe Iago when he tells them he has no idea why Othello is acting this way. He is telling an outright lie because he knows very well what happened. He caused her problem and is acting innocent to keep his plan on track. Because of Iago's asides the reader knows most of his plan. When I read this passage it was frustrating to know that Desdemona had no idea what Iago had done and trusted him enough to tell him to go talk to Othello. It is just ironic that Iago was the one who made Othello so jealous and Desdemona sent him to see what was wrong. This whole passage shows just how manipulative Iago is.
