Hazel Tells LaVerne
by Katharyn Howd Machan

This poem was almost a parody of "The Frog Prince." There were many humorous instances within the  poem including the diction. However, the part I thought was the funniest was when the speaker was outraged at the fact that the frog said she could be a princess rather then the fact that the frog was talking. Normally a person would be more concerned about a talking animal. However, she only dedicates one line to the fact that the frog is a talking frog, while there are several about being a princess. "me a princess...me a princess"(Machan) It is just funny that she thinks being a princess is more outlandish than a talking frog.
The line, "ya green little pervert" to the poem being a parody.(Machan) It is so direct. It sounds like something an uneducated maid would say rather than a princess in a story. In old time fairytales characters never use the word "pervert." It just adds to the character's speech and the humor of the poem.
