Frankenstein
Mary Shelley

After Justine was sentenced to death for murdering William, Frankenstein went into a depressed state. He felt guilty and morned more and longer than anyone else. He spent a lot of his time alone at night, sailing. He contemplated suicide but decided that would cause more anguish to his family. However, once he was away from home in the mountains he was reckless with his life. "I determined to go without a guide" (66). This seems like something someone who no longer valued his life would do. He would not have been too upset if he was injured or killed on the mountain. He just did not seem to want to take very good care of himself because he did not take a guide and he did not care if it was raining outside and he got sick or slipped. That is how depressed he was.
