"Much Madness is divinest Sense"
by Emily Dickinson
This poem is based on the paradoxical title: "Much Madness is divinest Sense." How can madness be sense? Or, how can "Much Sense" be "the starkest Madness?" In this poem, Dickinson is saying that just going with what the majority thinks is crazy. Most people think that what the majority thinks is sense. However, this poem insinuates that we need to think for ourselves. We need to try to have minds of our own. People who do not think for themselves are a danger. If too many people do this, the thoughts of the individual will not be represented. It will be like a mob: absolute chaos.
