Miss Brill
by Katherine Mansfield
"Why does she come here at all -- who wants her? Why doesn't she keep her silly old mug at home?" The irony of this statement and the whole story is that Miss Brill went to the park every Sunday and thought that people appreciated that she was there. She was a part of something when she went to the park. She was part of a "play." Miss Brill is an old lady who wants to be a part of something. Therefore, she goes to the park. For her, it means she has an important role in a story. Without her the play would not be the same. However, when the boy says no one wants her, she feels alone and unwanted. She is no longer a part of the play. She feels alienated. Miss Brill thought she was welcome in the park; however, ironically, people made fun of her, laughing at her her fur and the other things that characterized her. After hearing this, she goes home and cries.
