Frankenstein
Mary Shelley
In her letter, Elizabeth asks Victor, "do you not love another?" in response to his distance from her (138). Victor had been distant toward all of his family, and in an attempt to discern the cause, his father came up with the idea that he might not want to marry Elizabeth. The fact that the people Victor is closest to have no idea what is going on in his life or the cause of his emotions shows just how much he has drifted from the people he loves. The main cause of this is the fact that he cannot tell them about the creature. The creature has basically consumed Victor's life. He can't think of anything else and bases his actions off of what he thinks the creature will do. Therefore, because he cannot tell anyone about the creature he has drifted away from those he loves. No other human knows his secret. He can't rely on anyone else for guidance or help. In some ways he is as alone as the creature. The creature has no others like him on earth and Victor cannot tell anyone his horrible secret because they will think he is insane.
